Located on the right  (north-eastern) side of the Rhein, Kleinbasel has long been regarded as the 'common people's' side of the city.  Despite its more humble origins the name refers more to it smaller geographic size compared to Grossbasel.  Originally its own city, it joined as one with Grossbasel in the late 1300s.  It is still considered to be the more diverse part of the city and boasts an edgier eclectic mix of stores and services.
